I write this on my birthday, as I fly home from a trip to Kyiv where I’ve been away for a few days working with people in the music industry of the Ukraine. I often find at moments in my life like this — birthdays, New Year, work trips where I am inspired by others — that I consider the changes I’d like to make to my life. Maybe it’s things I could do differently at work; how I could be a better person; what would I like to be doing that I’m not.
I felt that same urge to reflect when Swn Festival was going through its 10th edition last year. When we started Swn in 2007 things were very different. So if we were creating Swn Festival for the first time right now, how would it be? What does Cardiff look like? What is missing? What does music in Wales need?
So we’re creating Swn Festival anew, building it in blocks to fit our answers and ideas, though we have to wait a little longer for decisions from funders and partners before each part is laid out for you. But today we’re excited to confirm that the new Swn Festival will be a month-long, starting on Friday 22nd September and closing late on Saturday 21st October. Across the month there’ll be a series of concerts, and we’re delighted to announce the first bundle of those today.
They include the joyous SONGHOY BLUES, who we bring back to Cardiff for their second visit. Last time they played Clwb Ifor Bach, but they’re a much bigger proposition now. JEN CLOHER makes her debut here, and she’ll be carrying a certain COURTNEY BARNETT along in her band. Their shows together a delight, watch some footage here. We’re super proud that THE AMAZONS headline The Tramshed as part of Swn Festival. When we first bought them to Cardiff for a concert in 2015 just 6 people came — evidence that it takes repeated shows, investment, effort, time and dedication from artists, venues, promoters and more to try, try and try again until the world wants to listen. THIS IS THE KIT is one of our favourite artists, and she returns to headline The Globe. Plus there’s shows from AQUILO, CLEAN CUT KID and SKINTS, the latter a one-off show in Swansea.
These shows are ticketed like normal concerts. No special Swn wristbands to run around. That fun is all to announced soon. The shows announced here all go on sale today — if you want in, then do get yourself a ticket as soon as you can. The earlier you buy, the less we need to keep reminding you, the more we can work on the other ideas we have in store…
